Serpentinization and microbial life in the oceanic mantle

Serpentinization has strong implications for the mineralogy and physical rock properties of the oceanic mantle, for the composition of hydrothermal fluids, abiotic synthesis of organic compounds and for chemolithoautotrophic microbial communities associated with such hydrothermal systems. In this seminar, I will review some of our work on reaction pathways during serpentinization and present some recent findings on subseafloor mixing of serpentinization fluids with seawater which supported microbial life in the subseafloor of a Lost City type hydrothermal system at the Iberian Margin.
