Global Statistical Models of Earth's Interior


Seismic waves accumulate local material information as they traverse Earth's interior. The aggregate of this information is brought to the surface as a seismic signal. Unfortunately, the original local material information, as component of the aggregate, is unknown. Small scale material features are hidden, but can be deduced to some degree by reconstruction of the local material properties from several signals using tomography. However, even a single signal contains aggregate statistical information about small scale material variation that can be accessed using Statistical (also called random) models.

This presentation shows different methods of statistical model construction with varying complexity, and how the model properties show up in modeled and recorded long period seismic waveforms.
